Walmart/Sam's Club day at Ct Children's Medical Center

Today was a day of thanks. Thanks to Walmart and Sam's club for being the biggest contributer to Children's Miracle Network and for our amazing trip. I can not remember the exact number, but the CT stores raised close to $360,000 last year! That's amazing to me. I think the main source of the money come from people dropping change in the boxes for CMN! Could you imagine what they could donate if everyone dropped their change in the box!
I spoke and told Becca's story today, It does seem to get easier! I think the visuals help bring home the point of how small she really was! I brought one of her diapers and one of Adam's diapers... big difference! I brought a hat that would have been too big and it was tiny and I brought one of her premie outfits that she had to grow into.
Becca was a wild woman today. I think she has been enjoying being the center of attenchion again. She had a hard time when Adam was born. She crashed when we got home, she napped for two hours Gary had to wake her up twice, I had to once! LOL
I also learned today that there is a program at CT Children's that teaches jewlery making as theropy. It was quite interesting! Each person there was able to make a braclet..... I took mine and Becca's to go. Becca had no interest while we were there. Once she saw the bracelet I made while she was sleeping she was all about it! It's interesting to learn about the programs that are offered for the older kids. Today was a great day!

Correction

I have a correction to make and I haven't figured out if I can go back in past posts ... so I will do it this way. We traveled with country singer Mark Wills (not Wells). I want him to get credit! He did a great job having fun with the kids! I'm a big fan now! Any celebrity that can take the time to spend a week with sick kids gets an A in my book.

Day 8

Day 8/Going home
As far as exciting goes day 8 was not. The only excitement of the day was getting home! I had a wonderful time, met amazing people and experienced things I wouldn't even dare to dream about, but getting home and sleeping my own bed was so nice!
We left the hotel in DC at 10am and our flight was scheduled to leave at 1pm....we did not take off till 1:30. Both flights were little "puddle jumpers". I don't like the tiny planes.... somehow they feel less safe even though I know that's not the case. We had a small lay over at JFK and we landed in CT at 4:30. We were home before 6! I don't know how we got so lucky, but our luggage was the first ones off the plane! That was a nice treat.
We had pizza for dinner and got the kids ready for bed. They were both so tired I did not hear a peep out of them all night! I did keep Becca out of school today, just so she could recover! Today was a day of rest!
Thank You to Walmart and Sam's Club this was an amazing experience!

Day 7 ESPN Zone Party

Day/Night 7
We had our farewell party tonight at ESPN Zone! It was great. We had so much fun. One of the champions has a part on Sesame Street and brought Elmo to say hello to everyone. I can not tell you the excitement Adam had just hearing Elmo's voice. Sadly Elmo did not stay long enough for pics with the kids... but he sang with Miss America. Mark Wells preformed for us that was amazing! Two concerts in one week! They had great food and the older kids had a great time playing games, Adam had a great time sitting on Daddy's lap and watching Daddy play games.

I tried to collect as many signatures of the Champions as I could as well as Mark Wells and Miss America. i can not tell you how much Adam loves Miss America! LOL Daddy is a proud Papa!!!! Ha Ha ha... I know I said that last line before.... but so true.

Becca has come so far, she went from being frightened of some of the children to understanding and wanting to play with them. She has made many new friends and I hope has learned lessons that will last her a lifetime. Some one may look different on the outside, but is the same on the inside! This also should be repeated.... God Bless these children, parents, siblings and families. Some have been through hell and back, but are still thriving and fighting and a better person for it!

This has been an incredible week, but I will be happy to be home! our fight leaves at 1 and we are back home at 4:30.....if you are thinking that the math doesn't add up ...... you are correct! We have a layover at JFK, thank God it is a short one and we do not have to get off the plane!

Day 7

Day 7
This morning was great. We stayed in our PJ's till late morning. Gary went and got us some breakfast and we ate in the room this morning. The kids needed a break. Adam was able to take a nap in a bed! Becca even took a morning rest!,

OK..... forgive me if I gush... It was a big afternoon and I am still shaking! At 12:30 this afternoon we met all the Champions and their families in the lobby and walked to the white house.... that's right it's 2 blocks away from the hotel! We had a tour of the white house and a group picture taken in front of the white house. The Champions in front, the parents and families going up the stairs. President Obama came out and shook each one of the hands of the champions and sat near near Becca and took the picture with us. He asked the kids if they had any questions: one of the kids asked where Sasha and Malia were... answer Camp David w/Michelle they are on spring break. One child asked what he was going to do to make sure every child had health care, the answer was that he is working on it! He invited all the kids to play on the new playground! The visit was short, but sweet! While the kids were playing and I was taking pictures I turned around and Obama was right behind me! He wanted to see the kids playing! This was amazing! The day isn't over! We have a party at ESPN Zone tonight.

Side note: Mark Wells (country singer) and Miss America have been with us the whole trip!

More later!

Reflection

I have some time this morning before our visit with President Obama. The kids that we have met down here have been amazing! There are premature babies like Becca... many 24 weekers, many kids with cancer that are still fighting their battles, two kids with Spina Bifida, kids in that have been in car accidents and even a child that has been in a plane crash. Katie, the plane crash victim also lost her father in the same crash. Her father was piloting the plane when it went down.

We sat with a child named Pearce yesterday. Her story is amazing! I have to share it. She was diagnosed in Feb 2008 with a brain tumor, cancer. She has undergone chemotherapy and radiation. She is 11 and a child advocate for children with cancer. He mom was saying that she goes to big corporations and speaks to companies about childhood cancer. She asks them for money for research. SHE'S 11!!!!!!! I don't know if could do that and I am 30!

I didn't know what to expect when we got down here. I did not prepare Becca for what some of children might look like. Some have been diagnosed, born with or one child even had the flesh eating virus... so the children "look different" Becca was frightened at first and actually used that word. I told her that even though these children may look different on the outside they are the same as her on the inside. She totally understood that! By yesterday she was talking and playing with all the children, they had a blast at the capitol.

This trip has taught Becca a lesson that she will never forget. Someone may look different or even scary, but they are a person with feelings and that they may even be just like her.

I have been humbled by these children and parents that have on going battles that may never be won. I can not imagine being in their position, but at the same time I know that one of my children could get sick at any time. The thing about illness is you never know when it will hit and who it will hit and how hard it will hit. Most people take health for granted. I will never take it for granted again! God Bless these children and parents!

Day 5 and 6

Day 5
Sorry there was no update last night. It was a crazy day and I again could not figure out the Internet charges and how to connect.
All I have to say for yesterday was HOLY COW!!!!!!!!! We were on a charted plane form FL to Washington DC. The only way to fly, if only I had the money....LOL We were driven by bus to the airport, we drove right up on the tarmac and up the the plane. Staff greeted us and security went through our bags right there. When they saw I had the car seat and stroller and all the carry ons staff came up to me asked me our seats, took all the bags and the car seat. All I had to worry about was the kids. Really just Becca, Gary had Adam. By the time I got on the plane my bags were stowed and the car seat was installed. Adam was sitting with me and fell asleep before take off. Gary was sitting with Becca. It was a nice break! We were served a meal, chicken parm or chicken fingers. The movies were free and they went around and passed out full sized candy to all of us. Adam cracked me up... they started clapping on the plane to welcome us, he woke up....kind of.. clapped and then was out! He also "woke" up for the meal, he took a few bites and then fell back to sleep. I was able to watch Doubt.... until the end when Adam woke up and shut my movie off... I need to talk to Delta.. there is no resume button...LOL I missed the ending! I'll have to rent it. After the flight we were put back on buses and brought the the Marriott. Oh my Gosh I need to make my bed like there's ... it's like sleeping in a cloud! This day was VIP all the way!
Day 6
This morning we had a bus tour of DC and had a group picture taken at Grants statue. We had lunch at the Capitol...... OH YEAH that's right. Many senators came, however Liberman was in CT today. Someone from his staff came and gave Becca a letter form Liberman and an award. The award was for CT Youth Hero. The kids had a great time pretending to be Senators and Adam made a Girlfriend, you may know her, Miss America. I will say this Gary was a proud Papa! LOL Adam kept going to her, those of you who know Adam know that is a big deal. He does not do that often! The rest of the afternoon and evening was free time. Gary and I took the kids to the Museum of Natural History, Becca wanted to see the Dino bones. After we saw the bones we headed off to the American History Museam. We saw Dorothy's ruby slippers, Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the frog and the first lady exhibit. That was all Becca could handle. We went back to the room and relaxed and then I took the kids to the pool. Becca was swimming like a fish, she picked up right where she left off. She was going under water and swimming great! Adam loved the pool too. When we came back to the room we had showers, Adam had his first shower! Then out to dinner. The kids had there first ride on the metro! After dinner it was time for bed. Becca got in her PJ's and was snoring before I knew it. Adam just fell asleep now.
Tomorrow is our big day! We get to meet President Obama! We have the morning free to chill out and then off to the White house after 12! In the evening we have a farewell party and then back home on Wed!
More tomorrow!

Day 4

Today was a "Day Off" from any manditory events. There was a walk event that we chose not to participate in. I think it would have been too much for the kids. We started out the day with a chraracter breakfast at the Grand Floridian . We met Pooh, Tigger, Mary Poppins, The Mad Hatter, and Alice. It was great! We rode the monorail to the Magic Kingdom and spent the day there. Becca went on Thunder Mountain twice and the Haunted Mansion 4 times! Splash Mountain was not her fav we got soaking wet! Adam hated Pirates of the Carabean.... but kept asking to go back on the magic carpet ride. (It's very similar to Dumbo... but a magic carpet). Adam cracked me up... we would get off the magic carpet ride and he would start signing more before we even exited the ride! We did some shopping today at the Emporiam and then came back to the hotel. Chilled for about an hour and then went to the hotel restaurant the Maya Grill for dinner. We came back to the room, I gave the kids a bath and now they are sound asleep! Gary went to meet Scott for a "Dad" activity...lol and I will be shortly hitting the hay! Tomorrow is a big travel day, off to Washington!
More tomorrow!

Day 3 in FL

Today was an all about Becca day! Today was the medal award ceremony. Mary Lou Rettin was the master of ceremonies. Gosh it was amazing to see all these kids! There are a handful of premature babies. The magic number for all of us was 24 weeks, Becca was the smallest birth weight. There a few with cancer, one that was in a plane crash (her father passed away in the crash, he was driving), children in car accidents.... So many interesting stories I can not even begin to tell them all!

The awards ceremony was amazing to be a part of! CMN staff, reps. (like Scott) from the hospitals, sponsors and their families and the Champion families were all in that room. I can not even guesstimate the amount of people. Gary says at least more then 17 and no more then 500...LOL That must be a little scary to walk out and see all those people and not see Mommy and Daddy in the crowd! She did so good, she chatted a sec with Mrs America and then got her medal and waved to the crowd! I have never been prouder of Becca!

Becca also had her "spa" treatment at Bibbity Bobbity Boutique. Every little girls should experience this at least once! She shocked me, for 3 weeks now she told me she wanted to be Snow White, we got there today and she chose Sleeping Beauty. It was so cool! One Fairy God Mother worked on her nails and makeup and another one worked on her Hair. She chose the Diva look with pink hair. She got to chose what eye shadow she wanted, what lip gloss, what hair do, what color hair, and what barrettes She wanted. After she was all dolled.... oops.... princessed up She had a photo shoot! The pics came out great! So cool! When we got home and washed her hair the first thing she asked was when she could go to the spa again and what princess she could be tomorrow! LOL I have to say I was kind of hoping for Jasmine, that costume was pretty awesome!

We met long time friends of Gary's parents today for dinner. We had dinner at the Swan resort, where we met Timon and Raffiki from Lion King. Becca was so happy and Because it was an early dinner, she got a lot of one on one time with them! Adam was not to happy to see ither one of them, but at the end of dinner he did manage to give Timon a high 5!

This has been an incredible day! Thanks to Walmart, Sams, Children's Merical Network, and Ct Children's Medical Center for making this trip so special for us and making a memory I know Becca will never forget. She has learned so much from all the chamions that she has met!

PS For all of you that were conserned that Becca would wander away, she has Becca doing a great job with listening ears and holding my or Gary's hand!

More tomorrow!

Day 1 and Day 2 of Children's Miracle Network Orlando/Washington trip.

Hi,
Let me start out by saying that this experience will be one that I will never forget for the rest of my life and one I hope Becca will always, always remember!
Day 1
Our plane took off at 2:40 PM yesterday! That in and of itself is amazing. I have not traveled with a baby in some time and had forgotten how hard that is! You have to have the stroller, the car seat and hope that you have enough diapers to last the day because you couldn't fit the extra package in the carry on. LOL Luckily Scott was there and did a great job helping Gary and I carry bags and wrangle the kids! Becca fell asleep 5 minutes after take off, Adam on the other hand was quite a different story. He fought sleep tooth and nail! Sleep finally came about an hour before we landed. Naturally Becca woke minutes after Adam fell asleep. For those of you out there with out kids, as a general rule Mommy's do not get breaks and or time off and certainly no sick time....LOL Both kids did well, Becca was a bit antsy after getting of the plane, but who could blame her. That's a long time to sit still!
We arrived around 5:30 PM and we were greeted by Children's Miracle Network. We were checked in for CMN at the airport and walked to the Disney world express. The express bus took us to our hotel, Coronado Springs Resort. This hotel is huge and beautiful! Once we were at the hotel, we had to check-in with CMN. They gave Becca and Adam a really nice backpack with a water bottle, stuffed animal and sunglasses in it. Gary and I received packets with all our sched. info, Disney passes and money for food. By the time all that was done, we did not get to our hotel rooms until 8! Notice all this time I did not say that we had dinner. Once we settled in our room we met Scott, our CMN contact for Connecticut Children's Medical Center, for dinner. After dinner we explored the hallways looking for pics of Becca posted. There are plenty and I took pics of all of them! Once we were done exploring it was time for bed. Bed time was around 10 last night. Becca fell asleep in a nano second, not Adam.
That was day 1!
Now for today.
We started out the day with a meet the champions breakfast. We sat with a nice family from Canada. There was a real Mounty walking around the breakfast! Adam ate like a pig, Becca I think was too excited to eat. Mickey mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald and Goofy did show up to the breakfast Becca was so happy, Adam was not too thrilled. Gary has done so much to help me so far! That makes me happy. I go get the kids plates and he's been feeding Adam while I get my plate and eat.
After the breakfast we hit the Magic Kingdom. Becca would ride on a ride with her head buried in my shoulder saying she was scared, only to get off the ride insisting that we had to go on it again! LOL Many rides that she liked we did at least 2 times. We rode on Small World, Snow White, Peter Pan, The Tea Cups, Carousel and her fav, the one that she has been talking about since we told her we were going to Disney..... The Haunted Mansion. She did not like the Lilo and Stitch ride at all... It's scary!
We made it back to the hotel just in time for the Champions dinner. We sat with a really nice family that had premature twins. Her story was very similar to mine with the exception that she did go into labor and her twins do not have the same birth date.... oh and that she had twins...LOL Please keep in mind that it is late as I write this! Dinner was great. After dinner all the Champion families were walked down to another conference room. Each champion was given a table. On the table were books with all the Champions stories, a stamp that was made with each child's signature. This was the time to thank our sponsors and sign there books. Becca cracked me up, one minute she was totally in the mood to use the stamps, sometimes she wanted to write her name and other times she had no interest in either. Towards the end Gary and I stamped the books. After the meet and greet it was concert time! The frirst performance was Steve Young and the pajanimals. Steve read a story and included Becca's name in it! Julianne Hough preformed for us tonight! I love her music! Becca got to shake her hand and dance with her on stage! It was another late night. Becca and I were back in our room around 10:30 and Adam and Gary went back to the room before the concert. Adam was having a hard time staying awake at the signing event.
It actually makes me laugh, when we go to these events who ever is sponsoring the event is so thankful to us. In my eyes, I am so thankful to them. They helped provide equipment that saved my daughters life. They had given my family a wonderful gift, the gift is the feeling that we are helping and thanking CT Children's Medical Center by helping them raise money. I am Thankful to them, Walmart and Sams Club!
g
End of day 2... More to come!
